ADAM FARMERIE ON THE REBIRTH OF GIN

Adam Farmerie, principal at AvroKO, and Brian McGrory, head bartender at Double Crown, treated Fahrenheit 212 to a spirited presentation about the history and recent rebirth of gin.
Turns out, self-medicating with gin has a storied past. Gin – short for the French word for juniper, Genevrier – first appeared in the 1600s when Dutch monks developed the spirit for medicinal purposes.
We learned how gin fueled political discord, contributed to stock speculation and led to campaigns to rid citizenry of the scourge of drunkenness. Not that any of that applies today…
The gentlemen also educated us on the finer points of how this white, grain-based alcohol transforms into a delicately fragranced, and sometimes colored, spirit. What botanicals are used during the crucial infusion process – and by what method infusion occurs – has a definitive impact on the final product.
As we soon discovered during our favorite part of the program: the tasting.
All in all, a deliciously ginned up afternoon.
