RYAN HAGEN ON PIRATES
Ryan Hagen, writer, researcher and pirate enthusiast, commandeered Fahrenheit 212’s attention with a talk on the murky world of modern sea piracy.
In a presentation populated by fascinating characters like Blackbeard and Captain Morgan—and some really unforgettable beards—Ryan taught us how to tell a pirate from a terrorist, and got us brainstorming how to innovate the piracy defense industry… Safety of Passage Surplus, anyone?
Ryan has written for Slate, GOOD magazine and the New York Times. He is the research assistant for “Freakonomics” co-author Stephen Dubner, who is hard at work with Steven Levitt on their follow-up book, “SuperFreakonomics.” Ryan is currently working on his first book – a history of modern sea piracy.
